Teak: Natural Characteristics

Why does my teak furniture turn grey?

Teak naturally greys under the influence of sun, rain and air. This is a natural process and has no effect on the quality or lifespan of the wood.

My teak furniture has small cracks, colour variations or a knot. Is that normal?

Yes. Teak is a solid natural product and every piece of furniture is unique. Small colour variations, knots, a lively grain structure and localised resin traces are part of the wood's natural characteristics. In addition, teak can move slightly under the influence of temperature and humidity, which can cause small cracks or hairline cracks. This is a normal occurrence and has no effect on the quality, strength or lifespan of the furniture.

It's precisely these natural characteristics that give solid teak its authentic look and make every piece unique.

Can teak warp?

Wood is a natural product and responds to changes in temperature and humidity. A slight movement or minimal deformation is therefore normal and is part of solid teak. This has no effect on the quality or lifespan of the furniture.

Can teak rot?

Teak naturally contains a lot of oil, making it highly resistant to moisture and mould. Greying is a cosmetic phenomenon and doesn't mean the wood becomes less durable.

Can my furniture stay outside all year round?

Yes. Our teak garden furniture is made from high-quality teak and designed to stand outside all year round. Thanks to the natural oils in the wood, teak withstands a wide range of weather conditions extremely well. Over time, the wood will naturally weather to a silver-grey, without this affecting its quality. For preservation, it's naturally best to store the furniture indoors outside the season.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Do I need to treat teak?

No. Teak doesn't need to be treated to last a long time. Treatment is only meant to maintain the desired colour or provide extra protection against dirt and stains.

How often should I clean my teak furniture?

We recommend a thorough cleaning once or twice a year: in spring and, if needed, again in autumn. With intensive use or heavy build-up, cleaning in between may be advisable.

Which maintenance products do I need?

That depends on the look you want.

To keep the warm teak colour: Teak Cleaner & Brightener 1 & 2, followed by Teak Sealer 3.
To keep the natural grey look: Teak Cleaner & Brightener 1 & 2, followed by PatinaShield 4 & 5.

See our maintenance page for the full step-by-step guide.

How do I restore the original teak colour?

Use a Teak Cleaner & Brightener. This removes dirt, algae and grime and restores the warm honey-brown colour of the wood.

How do I maintain the warm honey-brown colour?

After cleaning, apply a Teak Sealer. This protects the wood and significantly slows down greying.

How do I maintain the natural grey colour instead?

Use PatinaShield. This keeps the wood a beautiful, even silver-grey while protecting it against moisture, grease and dirt.

Can I use a pressure washer?

No. A pressure washer damages the wood fibres, making the surface rough and causing it to get dirty faster. Always clean teak with a soft brush or scrub pad.

Can I sand teak?

Yes, but only lightly with very fine sandpaper and always with the grain. Machine sanding is not recommended, as heat can cause black stains.

Are black spots or green growth harmful?

No. These are usually algae or mould that develop due to moisture. They're easily removed with a suitable teak cleaner.

How do I remove bird droppings?

Remove bird droppings as soon as possible with lukewarm water and a soft brush or cloth. Stubborn residue can be cleaned with a special teak cleaner. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or a pressure washer.

How do I remove wine or grease stains?

Remove stains as soon as possible, preferably with lukewarm water. For stubborn stains, a special teak cleaner can help. Due to weather exposure, any remaining marks often become less visible over time on their own.

Can I use a protective cover?

Yes. Perfectly fitting protective covers are available on request for many of our collections. A protective cover helps keep the furniture clean and reduces the effect of dirt and weather. Just make sure the cover can ventilate properly and only place it over clean, dry furniture.

Do I need to cover my furniture in winter?

This isn't necessary. Teak is highly resistant to all seasons. If you'd like to keep the furniture as clean as possible, you can choose to use a suitable protective cover. It's best to store cushions in a dry, well-ventilated place during the winter months.
